"this is Freedom." is a digital photography collection of 16 images of Shea Freedom, a transgender musician, and activist. This collection of photographs contrasts the emotional burden of being trapped by society’s expectations and perceptions of femininity, with the truth and reality of living life as an out and proud Black Trans man. We hope these images will serve as a reminder that the gender a person is assigned at birth does not define who they. The discomfort and pain is evident in the first set of photos. These photos are an attempt to visualize the pain that is experienced by trans people when they are forced to live inside of the box society wants to put them in.
When you look at these photos, ask yourself, How does this make you feel? What does this make you think? And why?
